David E. Carter’s personal collection of books related to logos -- more than 700 volumes -- is now in a university library, available to students and researchers.

David E. Carter has donated one of the world's largest collections of books on logo design and corporate identity to Ohio University’s Southern Campus in Ironton, Ohio. The Carter collection of books includes nearly all of the books in existence on the topic of logo design and corporate identity, including work from other countries around the world. In addition, there are a number of general graphics books that include many logo examples.

Over a 40-year period, Carter collected “every possible logo-related I could find, from all over the world,” he said. In addition, the collection includes a number of graphic design annuals, including the entire set of New York Art Directors Club annuals, which date from 1921.

In addition, the collection includes a number of volumes with newspaper and magazine articles about logos and branding.  “I would copy those articles, and when the stack was about an inch thick, I would have them library bound.

Carter, a native of Ashland, Kentucky, received a masters' degree from Ohio University's School of Journalism in 1967. The OU Southern Campus dedicated the David E. Carter Creativity Center and Museum in 2005, in recognition of Carter's career achievements.
